Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti said on Saturday that parents of children younger than 17 who took part in protests in France could be held responsible for the police killing of a teenager.

“Parents who fail to look after their children under 17 and leave them out at night not knowing where to go will face two years in prison and a fine of 30,000 euros,” Dupond-Moretti said. That is, parents have responsibilities.

Dupond-Moretti made a statement to journalists about the protests that turned into a spiral of violence across France.

– Organizers will be determined from social media

Dupond-Moretti said those attending the protests are organizing on social media platforms so that authorities can ask for users’ IP addresses.

He said authorities had information that the people involved were organized through apps like Snapchat.

“So you’re 13, 14, 15, 16 or 17, you’re at home and you’ve shared something on Snapchat, your account will be deleted and you’ll be spotted and penalized. We definitely need to calm down. Down again, that’s enough,” he said.

Dupond-Moretti urged parents to care for their children, saying: “Those with parental duties are morally responsible for maintaining order.”
