BERLIN — Indonesia will join a new climate club set up by the Group of Seven Nations, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.

The addition of Southeast Asia’s largest economy would bolster the group Mr Scholz sought to set up last year in an effort to coordinate global rules on climate issues and avoid trade disputes over green tariffs.

Indonesia will receive several billion euros from rich countries and private investors in the coming years to accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels, Scholz said in a speech on Sunday at the opening of the Hannover Messe trade fair in the presence of Indonesian President Joko Widodo. .

Mr. Scholz is seeking support for an ambitious climate agenda in Germany, which plans to rapidly ramp up renewable energy production, phase out nuclear power plants and end dependence on Russian natural gas.

The German Chancellor is also trying to urge other countries to accelerate their climate agendas while creating more opportunities for European companies to benefit from the global energy transformation.

He called on European leaders to speed up trade negotiations with Indonesia, India and Mexico, among others.

Mr. Scholz suggested that Europe could offer countries with raw materials such as rare earths and copper better deals that would allow them to get more value from processing the materials. BLOOMBERG
