Google has made more than $10 million in the past two years from ads that mislead users seeking abortion services to “pregnancy crisis centers” that don’t actually provide care, according to a new study.

The investigation revealed through the business analytics tool Semrush that a new report from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) revealed that fake abortion clinics have spent $10.2 million combined on Google search ads over the past two years.

The CCDH revealed in its findings published June 15 that these fake reproductive health clinics, known as Crisis Pregnancy Centers, appear to provide independent advice on reproductive health care, but are in fact run by ideological anti-choice organizations that try to target those seeking abortion. to disgrace. and using scare tactics based on medical misinformation,”

The report also showed that the number of Crisis Maternity Centers that placed these ads on Google totaled more than $10 million in two years. It also revealed that more than 2,600 of these so-called crisis pregnancy centers operating in the US outnumbered real clinics by a factor of three to one.

These accusations come shortly after a separate CCDH survey was released in June 2022, which found one in 10 Google searches for abortion services in US “trigger states.” The abortion was targeted immediately after the Roe v Wade reversal — sparking crisis pregnancy clinics, according to the study.

A Google spokesperson, Michael Aciman, said company policy requires any organization seeking to advertise to people seeking information about abortion services “be certified and clearly disclose whether or not they offer abortions.”
