Google unveils new AI tools, chatbot, mobile

ISTANBUL

US technology giant Google introduced new artificial intelligence (AI) tools, chatbot, mobile devices and other innovations at its I/O developers conference on Wednesday.

The company said it has created a new general-purpose language model called PaLM 2 that can respond to human input by producing human-like text.

Zoubin Ghahraman, Vice President of Google DeepMind, said that the new language model, already used by about 20 new Google products, can perform reasoning in natural language generation, language translation, as well as math and software development tasks.

The firm said it has also upgraded its Bard artificial intelligence chatbot, which competes with Microsoft-backed startup OpenAI ChatGPT.

Moving to the new PaLM 2 language model, Bard will be available with new capabilities. While the chatbot already answers questions in English, Japanese and Korean, it will soon expand to 40 languages.

The company also said that Bard can bring information to users from other Google services such as Gmail, Maps, Documents and Sheets.

Google Maps’ Immersive View will allow users to view their route with AI-generated images, giving them real-time insights on weather, traffic and other data.

The online office suite Workspace, a collection of cloud computing and collaboration tools, will soon help users create documents and spreadsheets using PaLM 2.

As for mobile devices, the company has launched the Google Pixel Fold, its first foldable handset, boasting as the thinnest foldable phone on the market with a 7.6-inch (19.3-centimeter) screen with its 5.8-inch (14.7-centimeter) screen folded out. $1,799 price tag.

Google also introduced the budget Pixel 7a Android phone, starting at $499, and the Pixel Tablet, starting at $499.
