San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

The Permanent Commission of Contingencies (Copeco) issued a green alert this Friday night in nine departments of Honduras due to heavy rains and drops in temperatures.

The departments declared on alert are: Ocotepeque, Copán, Lempira, Intibucá, La Paz, Santa Bárbara, Cortés, Comayagua and Francisco Morazán.

The warning came into effect from 1:00 p.m. this Friday and will have a period of 72 hours.

“Starting today, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the convergence of wind and humidity from the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean will produce cloudy skies with rain and scattered showers, from moderate to occasionally strong, accompanied by electrical activity over the Northwest, West, Central and South of the national territory, while there would be isolated weak rainfall for the Eastern region,” the authorities explained.

“In the rest of the country, dry and warm conditions are expected, but in the alerted departments, the presence of smoke is still expected to remain during these forecast days,” they added.

It was also forecast that the waves in the Caribbean Sea will present a height between 2 to 4 feet near the coast, with maximums of 6 feet in Islas de La Bahía and in the Gulf of Fonseca there will be a height between 2 to 4 feet.
