MANCHESTER (VG) Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola (52) was asked whether any of the “new” players he gave the chance took a chance in the cup. He then chose a Norwegian in particular.

FIRST FROM BEGINNING: Oscar Bobb, here in a duel with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall in Wednesday’s match.

– Absolute. Oscar (Bobb) was beyond brilliant. Offensive and defensive. The man played great. He did well, Guardiola said on Wednesday evening at the press conference after the League Cup elimination against Newcastle.

After several trips to the Premier League and Champions League, Oscar Bobb was confident from the start in a meaningful match against Manchester City for the first time.

The 20-year-old stepped into a somewhat unfamiliar role than what has been seen of him before. In the previous games for the first team he has taken a place on the right wing. But against Newcastle he played in a striker duo with Julián Álvarez.

– He played in it low rolllow rollThe Tier role is called the position behind the striker in a team., as a winger, but centrally we know he moves well. It’s also amazing how he works without the ball. The pace is incredible, Guardiola told VG.

He was also generous with his words of praise for Sky Sports. There he called Bobb’s performance “perfect”, while the local newspaper Manchester Evening News rewarded the Norwegian with seven at the fair.

A big part of the reason for that is that Bobb and Álvarez were just fine with each other in the first place. On one occasion it became downright dangerous, but Guardiola would have preferred Bobb to be more selfish.

– That chance with Julian. He (Bobb) was too “shy” there. In that situation, when the defense retreated, he should have finished himself. But that’s normal. This can happen at that age. But now he has been given 90 minutes plus extra time. And that is very good, Guardiola summarizes with VG.

Joe Bray also noticed that exact situation. He follows City closely as a reporter for the Manchester Evening News.

– On that chance with Alvarez… You saw Guardiola turn around and think “why didn’t he shoot”. He also said this at the press conference. At the same time, it’s a bit like how Guardiola wants to play, Bray says and laughs.

He thinks Bobb’s debut is very good from the start.

– He was everywhere in the first half. He was probably playing in his best position. He played a lot there at the academy.

The fact that Guardiola selected Bobb – and not Rico Lewis, Sergio Gómez or Kalvin Phillips, who were given a rare opportunity from the start – does not surprise the journalist.

– He was the best of them. He was very involved and constantly tried to create something. His footwork and technique from close range are sparkling. He gets out of situations that seem impossible.

– It is understandable that he is not so much involved in the second half. Newcastle became much more physical. But it is a good sign that he stayed on the pitch as City hunted for an equalizer, says Bray.

VG informs: Journalist Mikal Aaserud coached the Lyn boys team when Oscar Bobb played there in 2014 and 2015.
