Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine pioneered and developed around the end of the 18th century by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann. It is a science of recognizing the wholeness of a person, not just the ailments or problems, but the mind, body, spirit, soul and psychology of an affected person when an illness is present. Science does not alienate the disease from the person; rather, the focus is placed on the origin, progression, impact and effects of the disease on the individual. Homeopathic medicines, or “medicines” that are very different from allopathic or over-the-counter medicines, stimulate the body’s self-regulatory mechanisms to initiate the healing process.

This philosophy believes that when a person is attacked by illness, it affects not only his physical body, but the totality of him, i.e. the whole person is sick: body, mind and soul. The body shows symptoms of disease, but it is not the cause of the disease. The origin of disease usually lies in an imbalance of forces present in an individual. The symptoms expressed by the body, mind and soul are the manifestation of that imbalance. When an appropriate homeopathic remedy is given to suit the symptoms of illness, the balance of the vital life forces is maintained. When healing begins, the symptoms begin to subside.

Homeopathy is formed on the powerful and central principles that form its basic platform. These principles have proven their worth for more than 200 years in the treatment of most types of disease.

The first principle of homeopathy is loves cure loves – Homoeo means similar and pathos means suffering, this is the code after which the theory is named. It states that a substance that can cause disease in a healthy person can be used to produce a curative response in someone presenting with a similar disease. Every person shows symptoms of the disease in the form of changes in body/mind/spirit. Some of these symptoms are common to that particular disease, others may be characteristics of that person. A homeopathic practitioner would tailor the symptoms of the remedy to the person’s symptoms, paying special attention to those symptoms that are unique to the individual.

The second principle of homeopathy is The Single Remedy – According to this principle, only one homeopathic remedy should be given at a time. It saves someone the accounting of the effect of several drugs at the same time. Not only that, it also allows you to ascertain the full effect of the given drug. It protects against the unpredictability and ambiguity of alternative medicine practices and remedies.

The third principle of homeopathy is the minimum dosage. The principle that only ‘the minimum dose’ should be used is based on the understanding that the minimum single dose stimulus of the drug elicits the intrinsic healing response. According to this principle, we give just enough medicine to trigger this healing response. This response then continues, driven by the body’s need to maintain health and balance.

The fourth principle of homeopathy is the potentiated remedy. The process of dilution that converts any natural substance into a homeopathic remedy is called potentizing. The concept of potentiation is the process by which natural substances become both harmless and more effective as remedies. The process transforms a substance from the material state to the energetic state.

It has been known for over centuries that homeopathic remedies work. Today it has received quite a bit of criticism and praise and is known as a popular and effective method of treatment. People who have not had any success with allopathic or other forms of drugs have believed in it well. Placebo or not, this form of alternative medicine has managed to stay in the world with more than million success stories.
