One derogatory comment about immigrants was enough for the party of Kyriakos Mitsotakis to decide to expel MP Spilios Kriketos from its ranks.

The tough decision comes as Mitsotakis is seeking a second term in next week’s election.

Starting from the tragedy of the ship with migrants that sank near the Greek coast, although he condemned the tragic loss of life, including that of children, Kriketos said during an interview for the YouTube channel Kontra that Greece “cannot tolerate more arrivals “, while accusing the immigrants of theft.

Immediately after this interview, he was expelled from the ranks of New Democracy.

“Opinions such as those expressed by Spilios Kriketos have no place in our party. Hateful and racist statements are not part of the values of our political force,” her statement reads. The Greek coastguard is continuing to search for survivors from the sinking of the ship that claimed 78 lives, but hopes of finding anyone alive are fading “by the minute”.

Mitsotakis came first in the May elections, but he failed to secure a clear parliamentary majority. The former Greek government led by him has followed a very strict policy towards immigration, focused on “security” and closing the borders.

Greek media and non-governmental organizations have repeatedly accused Greece of “illegal” deportations of migrants to the Aegean Sea, a charge that official Athens has never accepted.
