JAKARTA – The Indonesian government is considering a tax on foreign tourists after controversial incidents circulated on social media, but industry groups warn businesses could suffer.

The coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Pandjaitan, called for the early introduction of the new levy. “Never sell Indonesia too short. We must show them (foreign tourists) that we are a nation that values cultural values, traditions and rules,” he said in an Instagram post on April 3.
