Malaysian police have arrested a Singaporean man suspected of being involved in an altercation with a GrabFood delivery driver at a petrol station that was captured on a viral video in June.
The man was arrested at 2:30 pm on Thursday at Iskandar Puteri district police station in Johor.
“The suspect admitted his involvement in the incident,” Iskandar Puteri police chief Rahmat Ariffin said in a press statement on Thursday, adding that the man has no criminal record.
He said the case is being investigated under Article 506 of the Penal Code for criminal harassment.
If found guilty, the man could face up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.
“The case is still under investigation to find more witnesses and other evidence,” Mr Rahmat said.
On June 16, a video of an argument between a GrabFood delivery boy and two Singaporean men was widely shared on social media.
It was reported that the incident occurred when the rider had reprimanded the duo for purchasing subsidized RON95 petrol from a Caltex petrol station in Sunway City Iskandar township and refueling it in a container.
The subsidized petrol may not be sold to motorists registered abroad.
Motorists with vehicles registered abroad, regardless of nationality, are allowed to purchase the unsubsidised RON97 petrol, but barring exceptional circumstances, directly in the fuel tanks of their vehicles.
Malaysian police later said there was no evidence the two Singaporeans had purchased the heavily subsidized RON95 fuel, but they were looking for the two men.
After the clip was revealed, the rider was suspended by Grab Malaysia. Social media users then spoke up for the rider, saying they would boycott Grab and remove the mobile app.
Days later, Grab Malaysia said it reinstated the rider after investigating the matter.
