Not even a month was Jorge Sampaoli without work. This Friday, Flamengo confirmed as the new coach the Argentine who until March 21 directed Sevilla in Spain.
Through a brief statement posted on its official Twitter account, the Rio de Janeiro club reported that an agreement was signed “to manage the professional soccer squad until December 31, 2024.”
The man from Santa Fe has been in the sights of the Brazilian leaders since Tuesday, when they fired the Portuguese Vítor Pereira after losing the final of the Rio de Janeiro state tournament with Fluminense, in the last setback of a weak start to the season.
The present and the performance of the Mengao team so far in 2023 was not at all what was expected: they were eliminated in the semifinals of the Club World Cup against Ramón Díaz’s Al Hilal, they lost the South American Cup Winners’ Cup against Independiente del Valle, the Supercopa de Brazil against Palmeiras and the recent loss against Fluminense.
