The head of state spoke at the State House, Nairobi, on Monday when he received Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The two leaders agreed that the United Nations Security Council should be reformed to make it more representative and more responsive to the needs of the 21st century.

President Ruto said Africa should be represented in the Security Council, the UN’s highest decision-making body.

“The continent can bring to the table rich ideas, suggestions and experiences that would serve the world well,” he explained.

The president notes that Kenya and Africa are counting on friends like Russia to create a new architecture in the Council.

On the raging war between Russia and Ukraine, President Ruto reiterated Kenya’s steadfast stance on respect for the territorial integrity of member states, as set out in the UN Charter.

“Kenya is calling for a solution to the conflict in a way that respects both sides,” he said.

Mr Lavrov praised the 60-year friendship between his country and Kenya and said Russia’s relationship with the continent has gained new impetus after the 2019 Russia-Africa summit.

He said scientific cooperation between the two countries has grown.

Mr Lavrov was in Nairobi on his way to a meeting of the BRIC foreign and international relations ministers in Cape Town, South Africa.
