In a commentary, state broadcaster CCTV said students should “take off the long dress,” referring to a crucial element of the story, perhaps its most enduring detail. The “long dress” Kong wears is what separates the rich and the learned from the uneducated poor who wear “short jackets”. So the advice from CCTV, it seems, was for students to swallow their pride, shed the long dress, and get every possible job.
