People believe that eyes are the window to their soul, so why not keep their looks and make them look beautiful as an entrance to the inner man. Modern eye surgery techniques have improved the view and appearance of various windows to the soul.

Lasik eye surgery is the latest and most innovative eye surgery technique helping hundreds and millions of people improve their eyesight and have a better outlook on life with their beautiful eyes. This operation is considered a blessing in disguise.

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a surgical procedure that reduces a person’s dependence on contact lenses and eyeglasses. This surgical or clinical eye surgery uses an excimer laser to permanently change the shape of the cornea, the covering of the front of the eye. Compared to other eye surgery techniques, lasik helps to keep a large part of the corneal surface intact, making the patient feel more comfortable and see better faster.

Lasik eye surgery was first performed in 1990 in clinical trials in the US. This was discovered by Dr. Lucio Buratto and Dr. Loannis Pallikaris by effectively combining the two previous eye surgery techniques, Keratomileusis and Photorefractive Keratectomy. In addition, Dr Jose Barraquer developed a device known as a ‘Microkeratome’ which was made to cut and reshape thin flaps in the cornea. This change or alternation in the shape of the cornea was known as keratomileusis.

This breakthrough in eye surgery technology reimagined eye treatments and changed an individual’s entire perspective. Lasik in India was guided by Shroff Hospital which has opened eyes to a whole new world. Shroff Hospital is the pioneer of Lasik eye surgery and has several years of experience in eye treatments.

The procedure of the lasik technique is as simple as the results. An antibiotic is first used to minimize any infection in the cornea and then the patient is anesthetized. The patient’s eyes are cleaned and local anesthesia is used to relieve pain during the surgery. Then the eyes are held apart with a lid speculum and a ring is placed around the eye. Aspiration is performed under high pressure and a flap in the cornea is cut with a microkeratome. The flap folds back to reveal the underlying stroma, the center portion of the cornea.

Next, Eximer Laser from a computer-controlled laser vaporizes part of the stroma in a controlled manner. After the stroma has re-formed, the flap is replaced and secured by natural adhesion until healing occurs. This gives much better vision and changes the appearance of the eye with ease and comfort. Lasik is a successful treatment in accurately correcting levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

Most patients with eye problems are happy with the discovery of laser eye surgery, but as with other clinical procedures, there are also risks involved. Therefore, it is important to understand the limitations and complications before planning to go for this type of eye surgery. The most common risk factors associated with lasik eye surgery are vision loss, debilitating visual symptoms and severe dry eye syndrome. Therefore, weigh the risks and benefits of lasik depending on the personal value system and do not let friends, relatives and doctors influence you.
