Donald Trump is the first US president, former or not, to be charged on federal criminal charges.

Trump announced in posts on his Truth Social platform Thursday evening that prosecutors had informed his lawyers that he had been charged. NBC News confirmed shortly after that he faces seven charges. These include making false statements and conspiracy to obstruct, Trump attorney James Trusty told CNN on Thursday. The charges also include the deliberate withholding of documents in violation of the spy lawhe said.

Trump, the leading contender for the GOP presidential nomination next year, will appear in a federal courthouse in Miami on Tuesday. He is still scheduled to hold a previously scheduled birthday night fundraiser Tuesday night in Bedminster, New Jersey, the Trump campaign confirmed to NBC News.

The former president kept stacks of secret boxed documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in South Florida until federal agents raided and seized the records last year.

The ex-president said he is innocent and tore up the case as a hoax.

Appearing on NBC Friday morning, Trusty said Trump is ready for a fight. “He’s a fighter, and he’ll come out swinging, and he’ll be fine,” said Trusty. “He’s not afraid of this thing.”

Hours later, in a shocking turn of events, Trusty and another lawyer on the team, John Rowley, resigned from the case.

Special Counsel Jack Smith has been investigating Trump for removing classified documents from the White House after he left office, as well as apparent attempts by Trump and his aides to potentially thwart the administration’s investigation.

It is Trump’s second time indicted. Earlier this year, a New York grand jury indicted Trump on state charges for allegedly falsifying business records related to hush money payments to women who said they had sexual dates with him.

Trump continues to face two other criminal investigations: Smith’s investigation into the January 6, 2021 pro-Trump riots at the U.S. Capitol, and an investigation in Georgia looking into whether he attempted to interfere with that state’s presidential election .
