A Louisiana couple share their joy after winning a battle against the state to keep the rodent they rescued from the side of the road.

Denny Lacoste knew he had to take action when he saw a rodent family hit by a car while driving outside New Orleans. He rescued the surviving nutria and took him in as a family pet named Neuty. The state of Louisiana tried to seize the beloved rodent for health reasons, but the family resisted the attack and was allowed to keep it as a pet.

“He was just a little hurt animal,” Denny told “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on Thursday. “We felt sorry for him.”

Myra Lacoste said the fluffy nutria was “so cute” when they brought it home and that it “fitted in the palm of (their) hands”.

Neuty has become a celebrity in the hometown of Lacostes. He is a regular at the family restaurant, Dennis’ Seafood in Metairie, and particularly enjoys boiled crawfish claws.

“He’s a lucky guy,” Myra thought. “He made it.”

While the nutria melts the hearts of many who meet it, the Lacostes explained that the rodent has a way of getting into trouble.

“Besides eating pancakes and things like that, he likes wires, couch wires, all kinds of wires, phone chargers, you have to pick up all that. I don’t know why he likes wires,” Denny told Fox News.

“They can destroy (the) inside of your house very quickly,” Myra explains.

While Neuty has brought good luck to the Lacostes, the couple does not recommend that other families adopt nutrias.

“He’s a lot of work,” Denny warned. “He listens a bit like a cat, not too well.”
