Madrid pledges 55m euros in aid to Ukraine: Spanish prime minister

Spain pledged on Saturday to allocate an additional €55 million ($60 million) in support to Ukrainian schools and small and medium businesses.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced the decision during a visit to Kiev hours after Spain took over the rotating EU presidency.

“Today, Spain decided to allocate €55 million, including €51 million through the World Bank Group, to finance small and medium-sized businesses in Ukraine, and also €4 million through the United Nations Development Program to provide it to schools. Sanchez, Ukraine’ He said that Turkey has environmentally friendly and sustainable energy systems.

Madrid also added that it will send four Leopard battle tanks and armored personnel carriers to Ukraine.

“We will be sending new heavy military equipment very soon, there will be four more Leopard tanks and armored transport vehicles,” he said.

Spain sent six Leopard tanks to Ukraine last April.

Sanchez also wished success to Kiev in its counterattack to retake the territories captured by Russia since the start of the war on February 24.

Expressing his hope that this will lead to “a just and lasting peace”, the President promised that “Europe and Spain will stay with you as long as necessary”.

“We will continue to support the Ukrainian people until peace is restored in Europe,” he said.

Arriving in Ukraine earlier in the day, Sanchez tweeted: “Already in Kiev. I wanted the first act of the Spanish Presidency of the European Council (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) to be in Ukraine with Zelenskyy.”

He assumed the presidency of Spain for a six-month term on Saturday.
