We are a month and a week away from the general elections in Guatemala and the outlook is not at all clear as to which candidates will occupy the ballot paper. Amparos, resources and, in general, a fight in the courts to remove and replace some candidates continue to be the order of the day. All within a justice system that has lost its credibility and is used by one and the other to annoy their opponents in a struggle for power like no other.

Lack of opportunities to improve their standard of living and insecurity are the two main concerns of Guatemalans.

The main problem in Guatemala is the lack of a true justice system, impartial, functional, fast and efficient with certainty before the law, where an innocent person can truly enjoy their freedom and rights until the contrary is proven, where the individual rights to life, property and liberty are unconditionally guaranteed and protected. In this way, a society will be able to prosper, generate more opportunities to improve the standard of living of its inhabitants and where those who do not want to collaborate peacefully while respecting the rights of others are subjected to order. Only then will crime decrease, institutions will recover their credibility, foreign investments will come massively and the country will stop growing by inertia at mediocre rates to start creating wealth at double-digit rates.

Every four years it can be confirmed that the most important problems of the inhabitants of Guatemala are precisely the economic ones and insecurity. Both have to do with the main deficiency of the government, which is to achieve a true rule of law that has a fair, true, incorruptible, impartial, functional justice system and intelligent, effective, well-prepared armed and security forces. with the latest technology at your disposal. The opposite causes favouritism, privileges and corruption, in addition to scaring away capital investment and does not control crime.

The Free Survey 2023, published by this medium and carried out by ProDatos between April 14 and 23 of this year, had some questions related to the economy and insecurity. Regarding the economic problem, the majority complained about lack of opportunities, unemployment, lack of work and high cost of living. On the subject of insecurity, the complaints are mainly against assaults and extortions. The general results of the survey regarding the country’s main problem were: 11.3% unemployment and lack of job opportunities; 35.4% high cost of living; 23.3% insecurity, assaults, crime and extortion; 16.8% corruption and illicit enrichment. If we look at it, practically the economic situation is what most worries Guatemalans, 46.7% (sum of unemployment, lack of job opportunities with the high cost of living). It is followed by insecurity, with 23.3%, which if we add corruption and illicit enrichment as crimes that affect us would increase to 40.1%.

The lack of opportunities to improve their standard of living and insecurity are the two main concerns of Guatemalans. Both have to do with a corrupt, deficient, biased, and ideologically and politically used justice system. In short, the lack of a true rule of law continues to cause Guatemala’s main problems to be economic and insecurity. Hence, so many Guatemalans decide to leave their homes and country to seek those opportunities in the United States, risking their lives and everything they have.
