Today, in the wonderful Spanish city of Malaga, you can find traces of the world famous painter, Pablo Picasso, everywhere.
In his birthplace, Casa Natal, visitors can see the famous painter’s first shoes. In the house where he was born, the painter spent the first ten years of his life.
Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 in the south of Spain and is among the most productive of the last century. According to estimates, Picasso managed to make about 150,000 works of art in his career.
It is said that his birth was very difficult. How true is this? “It wasn’t easy, his uncle Salvador was a doctor and helped give birth to Pisacco. At first the child showed no signs of breathing and was all blue. The uncle smoked cigarettes and after trying everything, he finally used cigarette smoke. And the boy really reacted” – says José María Luna, director of Casa Natal.
The dove of peace
Picasso’s artistic life also began in this house. His father, José Ruiz Blasco, was a drawing teacher and taught his son the technique of drawing from an early age. What did Picasso paint as a child?
“Basically what his father drew as well. His paintings of pigeons were very popular in the local market in Malaga. And pigeons are often present in Picasso’s works. On the plaque of the World Peace Congress in 1949 in Paris there is a pigeon drawn by Picasso – a pigeon from Malaga that has become a symbol of peace” – says José María Luna, director of Casa Natal.
Bullfighting
About ten minutes from Picasso’s House is the “La Malagueta” bullring, which Picasso used to visit with his father. The arena, bullfights, bulls and horses are frequent motifs in Picasso’s works.
Bullfights are also part of one of his most popular works “Guernica”. Spain commissioned a work from Picasso for the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris. In this year, the Spanish city of Guernica was also bombed during the civil war. Picasso presented this catastrophe as a fight between bulls.
Cubization
In the Picasso Museum in Malaga you can learn more about cubism, a world artistic movement, but which was made famous by the Frenchman Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. “Cubism broke the traditions that had prevailed since the Renaissance – that is, the paintings had to create the effect of looking out the window, with a unique perspective. “Picasso often worked with different perspectives in one work, among others in cubist works,” says María José Valverde, head of the museum./ VOA
