A man barricaded himself at a house in Worcester on Friday after shooting two of his relatives and then shooting at police as they tried to arrest him, police said.
The family members managed to escape and were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. According to investigators, none of the responding officers were hit.

Police were called before 9 a.m. Friday and were attempting to take the man into custody when “he fired bullets at the officers, luckily hitting none of them. At that point he ran back into the house,” said Worcester Police Lieutenant Sean Murtha. .

More than six hours later, with hostage negotiators and a psychiatrist on the scene, officers were still working with family members to contact the man, who was alone in the house, Murtha said.

“We do have some potential phone numbers we can call,” Murtha said. “We have a speaker. There are several ways we can try to make contact. And again, in a situation like this, time is generally on our side. We want to slow things down. We want to do everything we can to make sure for a peaceful solution.”
