A migrant was caught in the dead of night this week trying to cross the Colorado River into the US with scuba gear.

US Border Patrol agents arrested the man in the Yuma sector on Monday. Images show him wearing a small oxygen tank strapped over what appears to be jeans and a long-sleeved shirt. Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dustin Caudle says the migrant is about to be returned to Mexico.

“A migrant thought he could sneak into the US by using scuba gear to cross the Colorado River, but our vigilant agents scuttled his plan. The migrant, a Mexican citizen, will be prosecuted for reentry to Mexico,” wrote Caudle on Twitter.

The incident comes after Texan officials discovered a string of dead bodies in the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass, one of the most heavily trafficked areas for migrants.

Lieutenant Chris Olivarez, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said two of the bodies were recovered from the river on July 1, one on July 2 and one on July 3. The remains have not yet been identified.

“In the past 48 hours, the Texas Department of Public Safety Tactical Marine Unit (TMU) recovered four dead bodies, including a baby, from the Rio Grande River in Eagle Pass,” Olivarez tweeted Monday afternoon.

TMU operators and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission responded July 1 to a request from the U.S. Border Patrol “regarding a possible drowning of an infant,” Olivarez said.

The agencies deployed two airboats and encountered “several bodies” floating down the river. Olivarez said four people were brought onto the boat, and two of them didn’t respond: a woman and a little girl.

TMU operators performed CPR on the woman and baby, but they did not respond. Once medical personnel arrived at the scene, both were taken to Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center where they were pronounced dead.

The two survivors, who were not identified, were “turned over to the US Border Patrol,” Olivarez said.
