The 911 National Emergency System will pay the National Telecommunications Company (Hondutel) about 12 million dollars a year (more than 294 million lempiras) for the call and video surveillance service.

The manager of the state company, José Antonio Morales, told LA PRENSA that the 911 payment will be an important income for the finances of Hondutel, which has been operating with a red number for several years.

“911 is going to be an important income for Hondutel, we are talking about more than a million dollars a month, because there are 3,500 points where there are security cameras nationwide,” he said.

Nine months after the 911 call service and security cameras stopped working, due to contract problems with the company that provided the service, Hondutel promised to provide the technological structure required for the operation of the emergency system .

At present and according to the state authorities, through the Hondutel services it was possible to reactivate emergency calls and 95% of the cameras in the capital; Likewise, they are working on the recovery of the system in the cities of Choluteca, Cortés, Copán and Atlántida, where 911 operates. To get the system running they had to solve some problems such as equipment that was blocked, recovery of fiber optics, as well there were power failures that prevented rapid deployment development.

Morales pointed out that work is underway to upgrade to modern software in the surveillance and monitoring system that includes facial recognition, license plates, analytical tools and a database, which are qualified under the world standard.
