The Health Ministry said this was the highest number of deaths in Gaza in a 24-hour period since the Israeli attack began.

Palestinian officials say more than 700 Palestinians have been killed in overnight Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, the highest death toll in 24 hours since Israel began bombing the besieged area earlier this month.

The Israeli army said on Tuesday it had hit more than 400 “Hamas targets” and killed dozens of Hamas fighters in the attacks, warning it would take time to achieve its goal of destroying the Palestinian group.

Israel launched an attack on Gaza after Hamas fighters killed at least 1,400 people in a surprise attack on southern Israel on October 7.

The Health Ministry in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, said at least 5,791 Palestinians, including 2,360 children, were killed in the Israeli attack.

A total of 704 people were killed in the past 24 hours alone, the ministry said on Tuesday.

Ministry spokesman Ashraf Al-Qidra said this was the highest 24-hour death toll in two weeks of Israeli bombing.

“Thousands of families have been immediately displaced; it is full of rubble and rubble everywhere,” said Youmna ElSayed of Al Jazeera, reporting from Gaza.

“You can hear the sound of drones and Israeli fighter jets in the sky. Everyone says, everyone feels that there is no longer a safe place on the Strip.”

The Israeli army said it had killed three Hamas deputy commanders in the attacks.

Witnesses and health officials said many of the airstrikes hit residential buildings, some in southern Gaza where Israel had told civilians to take shelter.

An overnight attack leveled a four-story residential building in the southern city of Khan Younis, killing at least 32 people and wounding dozens of others, survivors told the Associated Press news agency.

In Gaza City, at least 19 people were killed when an airstrike hit the home of the Bahloul family, who said dozens of people were still buried there, according to survivors. Workers rescued at least two children from the collapsed building.

Aid trucks

In addition to bombarding the area, Israel has cut off access to food, water, medicine and fuel in a “full siege.”

More than 40 medical centers have halted operations due to shortages and damage caused by the bombings, the Health Ministry spokesman said.

Several aid trucks have crossed from Egypt to Gaza since Sunday, but the United Nations has warned of a “humanitarian catastrophe” if aid shipments are not significantly increased.

Jeremey Laurence, spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), said: “The aid resumed from Egypt this weekend is just a drop in the ocean of what is needed.”

Fuel, which is not included in the deliveries due to the agreement with Israel, was crucial, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said.

“Fuel is extremely urgent because the trucks themselves cannot move without fuel,” said UNRWA spokesperson Tamara Alrifai. “Without fuel, the generators cannot produce electricity for hospitals, bakeries and for the water desalination plant.”

UN humanitarian agencies said on Tuesday they were on their “knees” and called for unhindered aid to enter Gaza.
