A man is in hospital after being shot by Edmonton police after stabbing a mother and her 11-year-old child outside a school on Friday.
The Alberta Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating what happened after Edmonton police officers responded to a gun complaint just before 5 p.m. outside Crawford Plains School in the Mill Woods neighborhood
“It was reported to police that an unknown man assaulted and stabbed two people before fleeing the area on foot,” the police said in a press release.
The officers who responded to the call found a dead 35-year-old woman and an injured 11-year-old child. The child was taken to hospital but died, police said.
Two officers later apprehended the suspect about four blocks away.
“An altercation ensued and both officers then discharged their firearms and hit the suspect. The man suffered critical injuries and was treated by paramedics and transported to hospital, where he remains,” the police statement said.
According to police, the officers were not injured.
The Edmonton Police Department’s Homicide Unit is now investigating. Autopsies are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.
The suspect’s relationship with the victims is unknown, police said.
