North Korea’s deadline for launching a satellite into orbit expired at midnight Saturday, and the country has promised to try again soon after the failed attempt.

Pyongyang announced on May 31 its intention to fire the rocket within a 10-day period, making Japan and the International Maritime Organization aware of its plans, Seoul-based Yonhap News reported.

A first attempt was made on the first day of the window, but failed when the rocket crashed into the Yellow Sea between the Korean Peninsula and China.

North Korea, for its part, says it has the right to launch a spacecraft to put a satellite into orbit. However, the United States and some countries accuse Pyongyang of continuing its intercontinental ballistic missile program under the guise of testing.
