New York City’s Democratic Mayor Eric Adams issued a bizarre response after a woman appeared to curse him Monday for his treatment of the homeless.

After a woman, who appeared to be protesting, shouted obscenities at Adams, the New York mayor replied that “one should be happy” if another wants to “make love to them”. The eyebrow-raising exchange came during a press conference Adams hosted to reveal his efforts to remove scaffolding from city streets and kick-start a recovery of the city’s business district.

“F… you, a hole!” the demonstrator appeared to say during Monday’s press conference.

“She said I mess with homeless people,” Adams replied with a chuckle. “One should be happy if someone wants to make love to them. Do you know?’

Adams did not explain what he meant, but was answering a reporter’s question on an unrelated topic. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

According to the Coalition for the Homeless, New York City continues to experience rising homelessness that is at its highest level since the Great Depression of the 1930s. As of December 2022, there were 68,884 homeless people, including 21,805 children, housed in New York City’s main shelter system.

NYC MAYOR ERIC ADAMS SAYS ‘NO MORE ROOM’ FOR MIGRANTS: ‘OUR CUP RUNNETH OVER’

Monday’s press conference comes less than a month after Adams was criticized for his similarly bizarre response to a woman worried about high rents. That woman interrupted Adams at a June town hall event to accuse the mayor of raising New York City’s rent and supporting increases

“If you’re going to ask a question, don’t point at me or be disrespectful to me,” Adams told the woman. “I’m the mayor of the city. Treat me with the respect I deserve to be treated. I speak to you like an adult. Don’t stand up front like you’re treating someone who sits on the plantation you own. Give me the respect I deserve and start the conversation here in Washington Heights.”

“Treat me with the same respect I treat you,” Adams continued. “So don’t point at me, don’t be disrespectful to me. Talk to me like a grown man, because I am a grown man. I walked into this room like a grown man, and I will walk out of this room like a grown man. I answered your question.”

On June 21, the New York City Rent Guidelines Board announced recommendations paving the way for landlords to raise rents by 3% this year. Adams supported the board’s decision, saying it struck the “right balance”.

It was later revealed that the woman Adams compared to a plantation owner was housing activist Jeanie Dubnau, whose family fled Nazi Germany to New York City in the mid-20th century.
