The search for the missing Titan submarine in the Atlantic Ocean is now at a critical stage, as rescue teams race against time to locate it before oxygen supplies run out.

The submarine had been submerged with oxygen supplies for only 96 hours and has been out of contact since Sunday, making this morning (Thursday) in the US the last time to rescue the five people on board.

The BBC, citing the US Coast Guard, reports that oxygen could run out for those on board at 07:18 US Eastern Time – which is 13:18 local time (Kosovo).

Officials in charge of the rescue operation say they must remain “optimistic and hopeful” as 10 additional ships and several submarines will join the search today, doubling the fleet taking part in the operation.

However, the teams have admitted that they still do not know the location of the submarine, nor have they been able to locate the noises which were heard during Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the US Coast Guard expanded the search area.
