Pakistan’s Response to Iranian Provocations: The Right to Protect Airspace and Sovereignty

In the complicated fabric of South Asian geopolitics, Pakistan’s recent ‘Operation Marg Bar Sarmachar’, which targeted terrorist hideouts in Iran’s Sistan-o-Balochistan province, represents a watershed moment. This operation, carried out on January 18, 2024, is not an isolated occurrence, but rather the culmination of Iran’s provocations and miscalculations, which are viewed as flagrant violations of Pakistani sovereignty and security. The context of this battle reveals important insights on the dynamics of regional politics, national security, and the assertion of sovereign rights in international relations.

The relationship between Pakistan and Iran has been tense, with incidents that have challenged both countries’ diplomatic resilience. The sequence of events prior to Pakistan’s military operation illustrates a history of claimed Iranian aggressiveness and Pakistan’s rising dissatisfaction with repeated violations. Iran’s missile and drone strikes within Pakistani territory, particularly in the Balochistan area, provoked Pakistan’s military action, resulting in civilian losses, including children. This act was regarded in Islamabad as an unjustified and hostile violation of Pakistan’s territorial integrity, as well as a direct danger to the country’s security.

Pakistan has used a multi-pronged approach in response to these provocations. On the one hand, it has displayed a commitment to diplomatic norms and moderation, simultaneously demonstrating a willingness to use military force, when national security is threatened. This wise approach exemplifies Pakistan’s knowledge of the intricate interplay between sustaining international diplomacy and claiming its right to self-defence.

Pakistan’s initial response was diplomatic, with the suspension of all relations with Iran, the expulsion of Iranian diplomats, and the recall of its Ambassadors from Tehran. However, as the crisis worsened, Pakistan resorted to military action, demonstrating its capabilities and determination to defend its borders and airspace against external threats.

The history of Pakistan-Iran border incidents provides a broader context to understand the current tensions. The repeated attacks by the Jaish al-Adl group, blacklisted by Iran as a terrorist organization, and the ensuing cross-border incidents have been a source of permanent strain. These incidents, ranging from the killing of Iranian security personnel to cross-border firings and drone intrusions, illustrate a pattern of hostility and mistrust along the volatile 900km-long border.

Iran’s Miscalculation and Pakistan’s Strategic Precision

Iran’s miscalculation, allegedly caused by misinterpreting Pakistan’s prior caution as a weakness, resulted in major diplomatic and military miscalculations. The Iranian missile launch, which Pakistan interpreted as an act of war, damaged bilateral relations while also destabilizing the broader security environment.

In response, Pakistan’s military operation was characterized by strategic precision, with the goal of neutralizing imminent threats while causing little collateral damage. This strategy indicates Pakistan’s commitment to using its military arsenal responsibly, in accordance with the principles of proportionality and international law.

The international community’s reaction to these developments, particularly the stance of neighboring India, adds another layer of complexity to the scenario. India’s perceived indirect support for Iran’s actions, despite being a regional partner with a stake in maintaining regional stability, has been a point of contention for Pakistan. This reaction is viewed in Islamabad as full spectrum of hypocrisy owing to India’s own aggression and occupation of IIOJ&K and provocative tactics at LoC.

Furthermore, China’s call for restraint in the wake of rising tensions signals the broader international concern over the potential for escalation. It underlines the need for diplomatic engagement and conflict resolution mechanisms to address such disputes. Iran’s miscalculation, supposedly induced by misinterpreting Pakistan’s past prudence as a weakness, resulted in significant diplomatic and military errors. The Iranian missile launch, which Pakistan saw as an act of war, harmed bilateral relations while also undermining the larger security situation.

In conclusion, Pakistan’s military operation and its preceding diplomatic actions represent a firm stance on national sovereignty and security. The operation was a response to a series of provocations that challenged Pakistan’s territorial integrity. While Islamabad has shown it prefers diplomatic solutions and dialogue to resolve disputes, it has also made it clear that it will not shy away from using force to defend its sovereignty.

As the situation unfolds, it is imperative for both Iran and Pakistan, as well as the international community, to engage in constructive dialogue and seek peaceful resolutions. The emphasis must be on diplomatic engagement, mutual respect for sovereignty, and adherence to international norms to ensure regional stability and security. In this complex geopolitical landscape, Pakistan’s response serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between exercising restraint and protecting national sovereignty.
