Dozens of Palestinian students gathered in tents to take classes Monday after their school was destroyed by the Israeli army in the occupied West Bank.
On Sunday, the Israeli army demolished a European Union-funded primary school in the town of Jibb Al-Deeb, east of Bethlehem city, on the grounds that it did not have a building permit.
The school was located in Area C of the West Bank, which was controlled by the Israeli army and was first destroyed by Israel in 2017.
Hassan Brijieh, Chairman of the Commission on Colonization and Resistance to Walls in Bethlehem, told Anadolu Agency, “More than 60 students continued their classes today in two large tents.
He said the tents were set up by activists so that students could take classes after the school was destroyed by Israeli forces.
The EU said it was “appalled” by Israel’s demolition of the Palestinian school.
“Destruction is illegal under international law and children’s right to education must be respected,” the EU’s representation in the Palestinian Territories said in a statement.
The EU urged Israel to “stop all destruction and evictions that will only increase the suffering of the Palestinian people and exacerbate the already tense environment”.
Israel widely uses the excuse of lack of building permits to demolish the homes of Palestinians, especially in Area C.
Under the 1995 Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, was divided into three parts, Area A, B and C.
