SEOUL – A couple under investigation by police for secretly burying their 5-day-old male baby have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

This is the latest in a string of shocking cases of child abuse or infanticide after the government launched an inquiry to check the welfare of more than 2,000 undocumented babies born since 2015, after two unregistered newborns were found in a home fridge in June were found.

An arrest warrant has been issued for a man in his 20s and a woman in his 30s for strangling their son and leaving his corpse in a nearby river in Geoje, South Gyeongsang province, the provincial police said. Gyeongnam Sunday.

The Changwon District Court ordered the order because there was a high probability that the couple would flee.

According to the police, the baby was born in September 2022 and was released from the hospital four days later.

The couple initially claimed that the baby was found dead the day after the discharge. They also claimed that they buried the body themselves, as they were financially strapped and unable to afford a cremation.

The couple said they feared their parents would divorce them if they found out about the pregnancy.

The crime was revealed after Goseong-gun’s government discovered that the couple had failed to register the child’s birth and reported the child’s disappearance to police last Thursday.

Police sent about 80 personnel, including riot police, to search the area around the mountain the father had mentioned, but they were unable to find the corpse.

Upon further investigation, the father confessed to strangling the baby and that he had tried to bury the body in the wilderness, but was forced to change locations by some passersby.
