Protesters stormed the home of the mayor of the Paris suburb of L’Haÿ-les-Roses when Vincent Jeanbrun was in his office.

His wife and two children were asleep when the attackers slammed the gates and set the car on fire.

When his wife and young children tried to escape, they were hit by fireworks, injuring his wife and one of the children.

It was “an indescribably cowardly attempted murder,” said Mayor Jeanbrun. The police have launched an investigation into the incident, according to the BBC.

Police announced that 719 people were arrested overnight, compared to 1,311 arrests the previous night across the country, after security forces were deployed to quell France’s worst riots in years.

This crisis, which spread rapidly, presents a new challenge for the leadership of the president of France, Emmanuel Macron.

17-year-old Nahel, whose death sparked riots after being killed by a policeman, was laid to rest on Saturday in a funeral ceremony in his hometown of Nanterre, on the outskirts of Paris.

Several schools, police stations and shops have been burned and vandalized in recent days, but such a personal attack on a mayor’s home is unusual.
