Starlink, the satellite communications service started by billionaire Elon Musk, now has a Defense Department contract to buy these satellite services for Ukraine.

The news was announced by the Pentagon. Through a press release, the Pentagon states that: “We continue to work with a variety of global partners to ensure that Ukraine has the resilient satellite and communications capabilities it needs.”

Starlink is a satellite internet company that provides super fast internet coverage in even the most challenging environments in the world, from rural areas with extremely patchy network coverage to the case of Ukraine which is an active war zone.

Musk previously vowed to keep Starlink internet running in Ukraine “for free” even though doing so was losing money.

However, the company sparked outrage in Ukraine earlier this year after it said it had taken steps to prevent its service from being controlled by drones. The company said it did not intend for Starlink to be used for “attack purposes”.
