Young men and women perished in the train crash, leaving husbands, partners and young children behind.

The pain is indescribable, with parents standing inconsolably in front of their children’s coffins. But in this sad fate are also life partners, who suddenly lost the people with whom they thought they would spend the rest of their lives.

In their own way, those who lost support have given heartbreaking messages on social media.

Athina Katsara, 34 years old, mother of a 2-year-old child

Athina Katsara from Katerini was riding the fatal train with her husband. Shortly before the collision, the couple were not together, as her husband was in the toilet of the wagon. Her husband survived and is being treated at the Larisa hospital. They got married in 2019 and have a 2-year-old child

Dimitris Massalis, 32, mechanical engineer

Dimitris Massalis, was the driver of the Intercity 62 train who lost his life on the spot from the heavy collision in Tempi. His partner, Katerina, cannot believe that the man of her life is gone so soon.

“You will always be the leader of my heart. I love you so much. My lover, my husband, my partner, my best friend. Good luck my Dimitrakis…”, the partner wrote to the 32-year-old with a photo of them in each other’s arms.

Anastasia Adamidou, 24, student

“On your most important trip, you didn’t take me with you” – wrote in his post the partner of Anastasia Adamidou, only 24 years old, who lost her life in the fatal collision. The young woman who was riding in the third carriage of the passenger train had recently graduated from AUTH’s dental school and was continuing her studies to obtain her master’s degree.

“We went on many trips and the most important one you didn’t take me with you, you left me alone and I don’t know what to do with him. We had many dreams, we had told each other, we had told forever and I was left without you, when I see you again I will tell you that we made it, give me back the kiss I gave you and I love you like I said when I left you in the wagon. I hope I have made you happy, because I have also taken from your joy (…) I hope you are well wherever you are and come to tell me at some point not to worry because it is no longer up to me to make you happy and take care of you, like I always did. Goodbye my heart. I kiss you and hold you in my arms every night, it’s yours as I answered when you asked me. I love you forever!”, wrote the partner of the unfortunate Anastasia.

Nikos Nalbantis, 28, train driver

28-year-old Nikos Nalbantis was also inside the fatal passenger train.

His partner Sonia shared a photo from a party on social media. Tragically ironic, the cake she’s holding is in the shape of a train. “O soul, I am waiting here for you to return. To make our dreams come true. I’m here waiting… Look at me from up there. I love you always.”

Vaia Bleka, mother of two children

The 42-year-old nurse and mother of two, who lived in Tyrnavos with her family, had booked a ticket on the fatal train to take the plane from Thessaloniki to the US to meet her husband.

The 42-year-old woman was in the second carriage of the train and was among the first 36 bodies to be identified and transferred first to the University and then to the General Hospital.

She would spend three weeks in the United States of America with her husband, an Air Force soldier, who has been there for the last time as part of the cooperation between the two countries. The 42-year-old’s parents stayed with the children and were the first to be informed of the tragic event. Excruciating pain for them and her brother, as her husband came for her funeral, as well as the two children who suddenly lost their mother.
