One person was killed Saturday night in the crash of a single-engine plane near Mulholland Drive in the Beverly Crest neighborhood of Los Angeles, the LA Fire Department said.
Firefighters discovered the wreckage and victim, believed to be the plane’s sole occupant, above a home in the 3000 block of Beverly Glen Circle after a search hampered by heavy fog, the LAFD said in a statement late Saturday. The steep terrain was searched to confirm there were no other casualties.
The plane was reported missing by an air traffic controller, the LAFD said. Air traffic controllers from the Federal Aviation Administration, the Air Force and the pilot’s cell phone company were also involved in the effort to locate the missing plane.
The plane was en route from Santa Monica Airport to Van Nuys Airport when it was reported missing earlier in the evening, the LAFD said.
