CANBERRA, Australia –

Australia’s police said on Monday that initial inquiries showed 10 people had been killed in a nighttime bus crash in the state of New South Wales.

Police said another 11 people were injured in the accident and were taken by helicopter and road to area hospitals. Another 18 passengers were unharmed. Police said they had responded to reports that a bus had rolled over.

The driver of the bus, a 58-year-old man, was taken under police guard to a hospital in the region for mandatory testing and assessment, police said in a statement.

The accident happened shortly after 11:30 p.m. in Greta. Police said they had cordoned off a crime scene at the site and launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Australian media reported that it was a wedding bus. Jay Suvaal, the mayor of nearby Cessnock, said the crash was “truly horrific”.

“We are a major destination for weddings and tourists in the Hunter Valley, and so there will be people from all over the state and country who have been to these areas and probably done similar things,” he told Network Nine. “I think it will send shockwaves through the wider community.”
