Qatar said its stance on normalizing relations with the Syrian regime “has not changed”.

On Sunday, the Cairo-based Arab League decided to regain Syria’s membership after a gap of 12 years.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed bin Mohammed al-Ansari said that the State of Qatar’s official position on normalization with the Syrian regime is primarily a decision based on progress towards a political solution that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people. state news agency QNA.

“Qatar is always trying to support Arab consensus and will not hinder it,” he said.

Qatar has been vocally critical of the Bashar al-Assad regime since the civil war broke out in the country in 2011.

Last month, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said his country’s boycott of the Syrian regime continued.

Al Ansari said Qatar aspires to “work with Arab brothers to realize the aspirations of the Syrian people for dignity, peace, development and prosperity”.

Qatar hopes this agreement will be a motivation for it to address the roots of the crisis that led to the boycott of the Syrian regime and take positive steps towards the problems of the Syrian people,” he added.

The decision to re-establish Syria’s membership in the Arab League came ahead of the annual Arab summit in Saudi Arabia on May 19.

Syria was removed from 22 states in 2011 due to the regime’s brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protests, which led to a civil war.

However, the Syrian regime has started to make official visits and contacts to many Arab countries in recent months.
