WELLINGTON – New Zealand authorities said they hope police can enter a burnt-out building where at least six people died by noon on Wednesday and also begin identifying the dead.

A fire broke out on the top floor of Loafers Lodge in the Wellington district of Newtown just after midnight on Tuesday night.

It caused major structural damage hampering recovery efforts.

Six people are confirmed dead and several people remain missing.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) regional manager Bruce Stubbs said they hoped police investigators would be able to enter the building later in the day Wednesday.

“The next step for us is to go through and make sure no one else is inside and obviously work with the police to investigate and support them in removing the six people who were there,” he told state-owned Radio New Zealand . . REUTERS
