The match between River Plate and Defensa y Justicia, for the nineteenth date of the Professional League-2023 of Argentine soccer, was suspended after 27 minutes, due to the death of a supporter of the local club in the Monumental stadium, packed with more than 83,000 viewers.
The tragedy occurred when a River fan suffered an illness and fell into the void from the upper stand, and immediately the supporters who were in that sector requested immediate attention.
“The match between River Plate and Defensa y Justicia, which was played at the Monumental, was suspended after 27 minutes due to the death of a supporter of the local team,” the Professional League announced in a statement on its social networks.
Alberto Crescenti, director of the Emergency Medical Care System, informed the TN channel that “we were summoned from the River stadium from the inside. He was a man who died instantly, with very serious head trauma ”and he explained that” it was a fall from more than 15 meters high ”.
“They tell me that he fell from the Sívori (high) tribune, but I don’t have more precision. He arrived (to give attention) after a few minutes, but when we arrived he had already passed away. They are many meters (high)”, added the specialist in emergency situations.
A few seconds later the news of the death of the fan reached the pitch, after which the referee Fernando Rapallini met with the captains of both teams, Franco Armani (River) and Ezequiel Unsain (Defense and Justice), and ordered the suspension of the meeting, with resumption on a date to be determined.
The incident occurred a few days after the decisive match that River will play next Wednesday at the Monumental against the Brazilian Fluminense, for the fifth date of the Copa Libertadores, decisive for the aspirations of the ‘Millionaire’ team.
