Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have agreed to a new temporary ceasefire with the Sudanese army.

In a statement on Wednesday, RSF said the 24-hour ceasefire would begin at 16:00GMT (18:00 local time).

We reaffirm our commitment to a complete ceasefire.

There was no statement from the Sudanese army about the RSF announcement.

On Tuesday, the two rivals in conflict agreed to a 24-hour ceasefire, but were accused of violating the temporary ceasefire.

Sweeping restlessness

According to the Ministry of Health, at least 270 people have been killed and 2,600 injured in armed clashes between the army and RSF fighters in and around Khartoum since Saturday.

The RSF accused the army of attacking its forces south of Khartoum with light and heavy weapons, while the army said the paramilitary force was “spreading lies” and declared it a “rebel” group.

The disagreement between the two military rivals over military and security reform envisaging the full participation of the RSF in the army has turned into a heated confrontation in recent months.

The disagreement between the two sides surfaced last week when the military said the RSF’s latest moves were uncoordinated and illegal.

In Sudan, the military has had no functioning government since October 2021, when Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok dismissed the transitional government and declared a state of emergency in a move described by political forces as a “coup.”

Sudan’s transition period, which began in August 2019, was scheduled to end with elections in early 2024.
