Russian senior lawmaker Andrey Kartapolov said on Thursday that he had gone rogue after Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the paramilitary Wagner Group, demanded that all forces fighting on the Russian side sign a contract with the Ministry of Defense by July 1.

The head of the Defense Committee of the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, Kartapolov, at a press conference in Moscow, said that signing a contract for military service is the only way to legalize all fighters and secure their rights, including the right to social payments. .

According to Kartapolov, everyone, except Prigozhin, began to implement this decision.

Prigozhin was told that if he did not sign a contract, he would not be able to continue to participate in the “special military operation”, and his paramilitary group would lose its funds. Prigozhin added that the head of the Wagner Group refused to sign the contract.

“The following situation developed – the first is money, the second is stupid and exorbitant ambitions, and the third is exciting. All this together resulted in an attempt at treason and an attempt to deceive his comrades, ” he noted.

On June 24, Prigozhin accused the Russian Ministry of Defense of attacking his fighters, declared a “March for Justice” and set off for Moscow, saying in a statement that he would “overthrow military commanders”.

The Federal Security Service described the actions of the Wagner Group as an “armed insurgency” and opened a criminal case against Prigozhin, while Russian President Vladimir Putin called the uprising of the paramilitary private company “treason”.

Prigozhin and his warriors then decided to turn back “to avoid bloodshed” while they were 200 kilometers (124 miles) from Moscow.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that he contributed to the agreement by holding talks with the head of Wagner, which led to Prigozhin’s decision to accept the de-escalation agreement.
