Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday that the European Union’s presence in Armenia was orchestrated to drive Russia out of the region.

Commenting on the EU monitoring mission’s plans to open three operations centers in Armenia, Zakharova said in a statement that Brussels’ activities on this issue lacked transparency from the very beginning.

“The deployment of the European Union’s presence in Armenia was carried out by force under severe pressure from Brussels. EU members have effectively imposed their presence,” he said.

He noted that the launch of the mission, ostensibly aimed at helping to normalize relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, took place without the consent of the Azerbaijani side and other regional actors and without proper notice.

“This only confirms the true purpose of EU policy in the region, whose main aim is to drive Russia out of Transcaucasia and transform the South Caucasus into an arena of geopolitical conflict at the expense of the fundamental interests of the people living there,” he said.

According to Zakharova’s assessment, the increase in the number of EU monitoring points “has nothing to do with the task of establishing stability and peace in relations between Baku and Yerevan.”

“The fact that the EU mission is not accountable to the international community, and above all to Azerbaijan and Armenia, reinforces suspicions about the existence of a hidden agenda and a ‘second bottom’ in the EU’s activities ‘on the ground’. The mission of the mission is under the guise of its ‘civilian’ nature,” he said. .

The spokesperson said Moscow is not the only one with “many reasonable questions” about the real reasons for the EU’s activities in the region.

“We continue to believe that the continued expansion of the EU’s extraterritorial factor in Transcaucasia, behind which the anti-Russian targets of the United States and NATO can be seen, will only exacerbate the existing contradictions here,” he said.

“The dubious activities of EU ‘experts’ near the Armenia-Azerbaijan border have no ‘added value’. Moreover, they cannot ensure compliance and security with the ceasefire agreements reached with the decisive role of Russia’s mediation, he argued that the presence of the Russian peacekeeping unit continues to be a guarantee of peace in the region.

“The development of the situation shows that the tripartite agreement between Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia is the most sustainable basis for a solution,” he said.

Zakharova also promised that Russia will continue to assist the parties in maintaining security and stability in the region.
