Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has been urging people to get checked for cancer after revealing she herself had surgery for the disease.
Ferguson, 63, the ex-wife of Prince Andrew, King Charles’ brother, has had successful surgery after a routine mammogram showed breast cancer, her spokesman said on Sunday, and her prognosis is believed to be good.
In a podcast released Monday, which she recorded the day before surgery, Ferguson spoke about the importance of medical checkups, referring to her father who had passed away from prostate cancer.
“It’s really important that I talk about it. I don’t mind if nobody wants to hear from me,” she said in her podcast Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah.
“I’m telling people here because I want everyone who listens to this podcast to get checked, get screened.”
Her spokesperson said the Duchess was recovering at her home in Windsor, where she lives with Andrew. Despite their divorce in 1996, the pair remain close friends.
Ferguson praised the National Health Service staff who discovered the cancer and helped her with treatment.
“A really big shout out to the NHS and for helping me, and… all the doctors and nurses, the hospital staff who work so hard to help me and the lovely nurses who are so reassuring, and the counselling,” she said .
The Duchess – known by the nickname “Fergie” – has forged a new career as a successful author after her divorce from Andrew.
