Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., is declining calls to “de-fund” the FBI, despite refusing to push back against dismantling the police movement in years prior.

In 2020, Senator Tom Cotton, R-Ark., introduced a resolution opposing calls to “defund” the police in the wake of the Black Lives Matter riots.

Schumer opposed the proposal, claiming it was all “rhetoric and no action”.

Speaking on the Senate floor Tuesday to highlight a new resolution, the Democrat claimed calls to defund law enforcement are “dangerous,” despite his past voting record.

“Today I will be introducing a resolution denouncing the former president’s call to cut funding for our federal law enforcement, and senators will have to choose between supporting President Trump or his dangerous, dangerous view that we need to cut funding for law enforcement and the FBI, or will they stand with the officials who keep America safe?” Schumer said.

Despite his refusal to reject “defunding” the police in 2020, Schumer sent a letter to Senate Democrats in April 2023 outlining his new resolution that aims to “stop MAGA extremist calls to ‘defund’ the FBI and DOJ reject”.

The GOP’s first calls to “pay back” the FBI came in August 2022 after the law enforcement group raided former President Donald Trump’s home looking for classified material.

Schumer said: “Donald Trump’s call for the elimination of federal law enforcement agencies is a baseless, selfish attack against the men and women who keep our country safe.”
