South African motorists are required to renew their car license plates annually, and according to a MyBroadband survey, this is the most cost-effective nationally available alternative to doing this through the South African Post Office.

PayCity is generally the lowest choice, but has no service outside of Cape Town in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape or the Western Cape.

Also, the cost of R113.85 (R99 excl. VAT) only applies for major city delivery. Outside of South Africa’s major and secondary cities, delivery rates may vary.

MyBroadband analyzed the cost of renewing your license disc at the Post Office, Natis online site, FNB, Spar, Pick n Pay and PayCity.

Natis charges the same R72 administration fee as the SA Post Office. Still, it is cheaper as the delivery cost is R75.

The services are offered to residents of all provinces in South Africa. However, it is critical to remember that the payments do not include the cost of the actual license disc, which varies depending on the car model.

Natis charges a delivery charge of R99. Customers can also avoid the delivery fee by collecting their new disc from a post office.

License installment renewal is also available from First National Bank (FNB), Spar and Pick n Pay.

FNB’s service is only offered to motorists in Gauteng or Cape Town city and costs R199 administration fee. The delivery costs are included in the price.

Spar’s license disc renewals are the only service without an internet interface.

Instead, customers must visit a supported Spar store with their expired disc to renew it. Renewals cost R199 at the supermarket and consumers must collect their new disc from the same location when it becomes available.

Spar license disc renewals are available from select retail outlets in the provinces of South Africa.

Pick n Pay offers license disc renewals in-store and online, with a renewal fee of R250 and a courier fee of R79. At R329, the service is the most expensive in our comparison.

While still pricey, this is a significant cut from the R345 administration fee at launch and R99 courier costs. The service is offered in all provinces except in the Western Cape.

The table below summarizes a price comparison of the six services.
