Drought-ravaged Spain says last month was the hottest and driest April since records began in 1961.
The state meteorological agency, known by its Spanish acronym AEMET, said Monday that the average daily temperature in April was 58.8 Fahrenheit, which is 3 degrees Celsius above average.
AEMET said average maximum temperatures increased by 4.7 degrees Celsius during the month.

Rainfall was a fifth of what would normally be expected in the month, making it Spain’s driest April on record.

Last year was the warmest in Spain since records began in 1961, and also the country’s sixth driest.

Three years of scant rainfall and high temperatures brought the country officially into prolonged drought earlier this year.
A flash study last week by a group of international scientists found that record-breaking April temperatures in Spain, Portugal and North Africa were made 100 times more likely by human-induced climate change and would have been nearly impossible in the past.

The government has asked the European Union for emergency funds to support farmers and ranchers whose crops are affected by the situation.
