A section of the 5 Freeway will be completely closed overnight this week to allow workers to repair landslide damage, according to the California Department of Transportation.

All southbound lanes between Vista Del Lago Road and Templin Highway in the southern part of the Grapevine will be closed Monday through Thursday overnight, department spokesman Michael Comeaux said.

The closures near Castaic are from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Another shutdown is scheduled for 11:59 p.m. Saturday and finish the next morning at 8am.

Southbound traffic is rerouted east on Highway 138 and southbound on Highway 14 to return to the southbound highway, Caltrans said in a statement.

After the closures, two southbound lanes will reopen each morning.

The landslide was first observed on March 21 and expanded over the next few days, reaching the southbound shoulder on March 29, Comeaux said. The repair work will limit damage at the site and will include paving and re-stripping of the affected portion of the roadway.

Work is also continuing on a nearby section of the northbound highway, which was damaged in January when a wet-weather-saturated hillside collapsed, sending part of the slope into the two right-hand lanes.
