According to data from consumer research firm All View Cloud, nearly 12 million new air conditioning units were sold in June, about 36 percent more than the same period in 2022.

The prolonged heat was especially unbearable in northern China, where buildings are built to withstand harsh winters.

Beijing’s municipal government has ordered schools to reduce or cancel outdoor activities, while at least one outdoor festival was canceled over the weekend due to persistent high temperatures.

“Following a heat wave warning from (the) authorities in Beijing and seeing temperatures reach above 40 degrees Celsius this week, we have decided to postpone Juicy Burger Fest 2023, an outdoor event, to avoid potential health risks caused by heat-related illnesses like heat stroke,” the Beijinger, a magazine that hosted the festival, wrote on his official WeChat account.
