Things are moving forward and new and advanced procedures are being developed for those who were originally unable to have the standard Lasik procedure. Dr. Khanna has introduced a brand new procedure called “Super Lasik”, a new safer and more stable procedure now made for people with thin or abnormal corneas. The great thing about this new procedure is that the effects are more precise and longer lasting. This procedure is the result of the fusion of benefits of both PRK and LASIK. To perform this groundbreaking surgery, Dr. Khanna introduced a new FDA-cleared device called an Epikeratome. This instrument raises a flap about 50 microns (thinner than even an Intralase). Laser surface ablation using the latest generation of LASERS is then ready. As with LASIK, the flap is replaced. A bandage lens is then placed over the eye. This is a safer method of visual correction. There is no distortion of the corneal architecture. So if the cornea has a young modulus that is low, thin, or asymmetrical, this method is safer.

Young’s modulus = stress/strain

Anyone over the age of eighteen can benefit from corrective eye surgery. The investment pays for itself. What’s really exciting is that Superlasik can be done even on patients with thin corneas who were not candidates for LASIK. It is also safer because minimal trauma is inflicted on the cornea.

Patients leave with a new completeness and clarity in life, because how we see things really influences our overall outlook on life. We are impressed with the quick recovery after this new procedure. It went even better than we expected. Most of our patients can drive the next day and some even go back to work. People leave feeling rejuvenated and young, and who wouldn’t want that?

What was exciting is that this technology is even safer than Intralase or the all-laser LASIK. The flap is more consistent and thinner than what the Intralase can make.

Can’t a rose have thorns? Superlasik may not be a panacea for everyone. If a patient has keratoconus or Pellucid marginal degeneration or any other corneal disease, then this procedure is not for them. Immunological diseases and cattracts can also rule people out.
