Fewer than 160 people have been arrested overnight in connection with riots that rocked cities across France following the murder of a teenager by a police officer, the interior ministry said Monday.

The relative calm after five nights of fierce rioting provided some relief to Emmanuel Macron’s government in its struggle to regain control of the situation, just months after widespread protests over an unpopular pension reform and a year away from hosting the Olympics. Summer Games.

The interior ministry said 157 people were arrested overnight, up from more than 700 arrests the night before and more than 1,300 on Friday night.

Three of the 45,000 police officers deployed overnight were injured, the ministry said, while preliminary figures say about 350 buildings and 300 vehicles were damaged.

The grandmother of the teen shot dead by police during a traffic stop in a Paris suburb said on Sunday she wanted the nationwide riots sparked by his murder to end.

Since Tuesday’s murder, rioters have set fire to cars, looted shops and targeted town halls and other properties – including the home of the mayor of a Paris suburb, which was attacked on Saturday while his wife and children slept inside.
