“It is believed that the accused was the child’s father,” the affidavit said. “The defendant did not want (Gonzalez) to have an abortion.”

Most abortions have been banned in Texas, except for medical emergencies, since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last summer. Abortions after a heartbeat has been detected, which is usually around six weeks of pregnancy, have been banned since September 2021. Private citizens can sue anyone who aided and encouraged an abortion under the 2021 law.

The incident between Thompson and Gonzalez happened the day after she returned from an abortion in Colorado.

Surveillance footage from the parking lot shows Gonzalez “shrugging” at him before the pair continued walking, police said. Thompson then pulls out a gun and shoots Gonzalez in the head. He shot her several times after she fell to the ground and then fled, according to the affidavit.

Gonzalez’s sister was at the scene and heard the shots, police said. Another witness saw Thompson try to strangle Gonzalez, but was unable to report the incident to police because she did not have her cell phone with her.

Before the shooting, Thompson had already been charged with assault after being accused of strangling a woman in March.

The affidavit of the March incident does not specifically name Gonzalez as a victim, but it does state that the woman told police several times during their relationship that Thompson beat her up and that Thompson informed police at the time that she was pregnant with his child.

The woman “reiterated that she feared the suspect because he had threatened to harm her family and children,” the affidavit read.
